This is one of my favourite cocktails, ever. I once scoffed down the most heady of these bad boys at St. Judes Cellars on Brunswick Street. I’ve been trying to emulate that recipe since, but they got some hinky sh*t in there including ginger liqueur or something.
A Manhattan is usually served with a maraschino cherry but they are prohibitively difficult to find. To balance this out, I like to add a dash of kirsch or cherry brandy instead.
40 ml Whiskey (Canadian, Rye or Bourbon)
10 ml Sweet Vermouth such as Martini Rosso
Dash of bitters
Dash of kirsch or cherry brandy
In a glass, stir whisky, vermouth, bitters and kirsch over ice. Don’t shake this baby. Strain into martini glass and garnish with a lemon twist. Voila! Sophistication in the Suburbs!
Will it keep you cool during this infernal and temporally-challenged heatwave? Hell no, but you’ll be too happy to care!
